Pasadena Doo Dah Queen Tryouts will be held Sunday, October 8 at the Old Towne Pub.
The tryouts will precede the return of Pasadena’s other parade to Old Pasadena. With 44 years of Doo Dah under its spangly belt, the irreverent parade—originally mounted in the ‘70s as an alternative to the more traditional Tournament of Roses Parade—will return to its original route in Old Pasadena on Sunday, November 19.
This year’s event is co-produced by Light Bringer Project and the Doo Dah Preservation Society.
Dozens of zany art cars, mutant vehicles, marching, rocking, and punk bands will make their way through Old Pasadena at 11 a.m.
The parade begins at Raymond Avenue at Holly Street, heads south for two blocks, and then heads west onto Colorado Boulevard, ending at Pasadena Avenue, under a likely barrage of flying tortillas, along with a range of performance artists, disruptors, political pundits, satirists, absurdists, lone wolves, and merrymakers.
In case you’re wondering, tortillas have been banned at the parade by City ordinance since the early 1990s.
An “official” Doo Dah after-party will be held at the Old Towne Pub on North Fair Oaks Avenue.
The Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade began as a grassroots event in 1978, and quickly gained national attention for its eccentric and irreverent satire. The parade was highlighted in 2015 in the Wall Street Journal. It was also named “America’s Best Parade” by Readers Digest, and was featured in the book 50 Places You Must Visit Before You Die.
A number of Doo Dah veteran participants will join this year’s cacophony, including Art Car Garage, Flying Baby, DubRobot, the Trashion Show, Ocean Commotion, Radioactive Chicken Heads, Senor Groucho, Devilicious, Nowman, The Church of the SubGenius, the Rock ‘n Roll Preservation Society, and the Highland Park Thursday Evening’s Society Circuit Bending Marching Band and Ladies’ Auxiliary, just to name a few.
Doo Dah newbies will include the BLOW Brass Marching Band, Fig & Friends, Indigo Bruise punk band, Dressed to Kill KISS tribute band, Urf McGurf, Kittylicious, To the Moon Stinky Feet, Paparazzi Patty, the LA Breakfast Club’s Democracy of Ham an’ Eggs, Head Nurses for Safe Sex, The People’s Banana, Estilo Scissor Hands, Vick & the Lassoed Hick, Cali’s Tots, and the League of Women Voters of the Pasadena Area’s Get Out the Vote.
The LA Metro’s Gold Line’s Memorial Park station will bring guests and participants directly to the parade formation area, as will Pasadena Transit bus lines.
