Police have said at least 18 people working on a railway bridge being built across a ravine in northeastern India were killed when it collapsed on Wednesday, with several others missing.
Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga said the incident occurred near Sairang, about 20km (12 miles) from Mizoram’s state capital, Aizawl. According to local media report, up to 40 workers were at the site when the bridge collapsed.
Senior local police officer Rex Zarzoliana Vanchhawng told the press that rescuers had retrieved 18 bodies.
In October last year, more than 140 people were killed in Gujarat when a pedestrian suspension bridge collapsed in India’s western state of Gujarat.
